A new Chase card? IHG Rewards Club Mastercard hits the scene!

I was spending some time planning out my next round of credit card applications (a typical Sunday night in my house ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) when I came across this interesting page on the Chase site:

ihg mastercard

The reason that this was interesting to me is that up until a few days ago, this card was a Visa Signature:

Correct me if I’m wrong here (and I’m sure you will!), but I think this is an opportunity for a fresh bonus on this card! In other words, if you currently have the Visa version of this card, you can now apply for the Mastercard version and collect the current bonus (60,000 IHG points).

I’m not sure if you can simultaneously hold both cards, or if you first need to cancel the Visa and then get the Mastercard. But I do know that this is now a different product. And I would assume that all current Visa IHG cardholders will automatically be sent the Mastercard version on the expiration date of their Visa. In other words, if you are a current cardholder, you might consider canceling your Visa card before its expiration date so that you can then apply for the Mastercard and get the bonus (before they automatically send you a Visa and you lose that opportunity).

Josh currently has a Chase IHG Visa, and it’s a card we keep because of the annual free night bonus. Since you can redeem your free night at any IHG property, this is a very valuable perk. For example, rooms at the Willard Intercontinental in Washington, DC go for around $500/night, but with the free night award, your stay would be…well, free ๐Ÿ˜‰

IHG Rewards Club is the hotel loyalty program of InterContinental Hotel Group which includes Candlewood Suites, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Hotel Indigo,  Staybridge Suites, and InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Here is the current offer for the new Chase IHG Mastercard.

  • 60,000 bonus points after spending $1000 in the first 3 months.
  • Free night every year at any IHG property.
  • 5 points per $1 spent at IHG hotels.
  • 2 points per $1 spent on gas, groceries and dining.
  • 1 point per $1 on everything else.
  • 10% points rebate on any Rewards Club point redemptions.
  • No fee 1st year, then $49.
  • No foreign transaction fees.

Does anyone have any more information about this new card? Or maybe everyone already knows about it and I’m just late to the party? (Entirely possible). What do you think about this card? Please share your thoughts! Let’s discuss.

  1. Thanks for the heads up. I hope your speculation turns out to be true. Note, however, that the rewards program is no longer called Priority Club; it is now IHG Rewards Club.

    1. MFK – Thanks, good catch. Will edit. That’s what I get for writing posts late-night. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. You should be able to get a sign-up bonus again if you obtain this card. I’ve even received the VISA bonus more than once. Plus, I like the look of the new card!

  3. This is great news! I love how you’re the only one who ever writes about the things that I actually value! Thanks! ๐Ÿ˜€

  4. I think there’s a little confusion, I’ve held the Visa Card for several years now and just received a notice that they’re sending me a new MasterCard to replace my Visa. I don’t think it’s option to have both, I think they’re just converting the Visa Cards over to MasterCard. According to the notice I received as long as my account is in good standing the new cards come in May. I’m interested into what initiated the change but I’ve yet to find anything.

    1. Jen – Exactly, the fact that they are converting the Visa cards to MasterCards creates a possible opportunity (if you cancel the card now, then reapply once it is officially a MasterCard, you might be able to get the bonus for the MasterCard, even though you already got it for the Visa). I don’t have any official info on this, but since it has happened with different Chase products it seems like a fairly safe bet.
