A truly secret Paris hotel.

a room with a lamp and a table

Have you ever been to Paris? I haven’t visited for over ten years, but we’re headed there this summer as part of our big trip. I’m starting to do some planning and poking around, and I keep finding really interesting gems and treasures – such as this place.

This is a hotel.

It’s called the Marais House, and you won’t learn the address – or the rate – until you make a booking. You can stay in one of the four rooms, or you can choose to book the entire house.

Filled with rich fabrics, antiques, fresh flowers, and art, the house is unique and eccentric. There is one bedroom on each floor, and they are all named: Elephant, Velvet, Studio, and Celadon. Every morning, the owner of the hotel, Yann-Gabriel Hentschke, serves pastries and coffee on a table made of Versailles parquet…in the cellar.

Supposedly it’s hard to find, even after you know where you’re going.

Here is what the hotel website discloses about the location:

The house is in the 3rd Arrondissement just a short walk from the heart of the Marais District.

The Marais is the oldest and most historical area in Paris. A place of aristocratic residence in the XVII century, it was abandoned during the Revolution and became an architectural wasteland. The Marais was not touched by Baron Haussman in his 1830’s effort to make Paris the most modern city in IXXth century Europe. The Marais retains its pre IXXth Century splendor. In 1962 it was declared a historical monument and the resurrection began in earnest. The area is once again fashionable with many galleries and restaurants, fashion boutiques and cultural centers. The main streets and narrow passageways are bustling with activity.

Can you imagine staying here? How cool would that be?

  1. It reminds me a little bit of The Gallery Inn in San Juan. Very eclectic and artsy. No sign on the door to let you know it was a hotel. The fact that the Parisian one doesn’t tell you any rates definitely screams “If you have to ask, you can’t afford it” to me. For a luxury property they sure could use a new website. Maybe they’d swap me one for a few nights in September. 😉

    1. Melissa – Totally agree about the website! Maybe they really want to keep it a secret and discourage people from looking too closely. 😉

  2. Cacinda – Hi! It’s been awhile! You would be the perfect person to go and experience that hotel.

  3. I am laying in my new home, Vendome Park Hyatt, for 6 nights @ 22k. I would not hesitate to book again @30k. The staff is superb……the spa decadent…….the location for shopping and touring brilliant. The concierge desk one of the best I have ever interacted with……such a calm and quiet setting…..and the tennis pros all seem to love it as Federer, Andy Murray, and Maria S….Vich……all spotted at breakfast……if you bring the kids you must tell to whisper………….it’s a whispering kind of place in a very French and very good way…….

    1. JustSaying – That is what I was hoping to hear 🙂

SO GLAD you guys are having a great time!!!

    1. Rebecca – We’re not going to stay there this trip, but maybe one day in the future…

  4. I’m thinking that not only is it going to be hugely pricey but it’s probably a better place for you and Josh, rather than for the children.
