How to save a lot of cash at Bloomingdale’s. Right now.

a woman wearing black jeans

I’ve been going through a transitional wardrobe phase recently. I just started a new job, which is definitely more intense and professional and fashion-y than my old job, so what I wear actually matters. I can’t get away with running out of the house clad in workout gear (my favorite uniform and disguise), or just throwing the first thing I grab from the bottom of my closet floor (this sounds horrible, but actually my closet is too small and lots ends up on the floor).

So I’ve been on a minor shopping spree. Okay, maybe more than minor. Intermediate. An intermediate spree. And I have to say that my heart leapt for joy when I saw the recent, huge portal bonuses around the internet…especially for Bloomingdale’s.

The timing is perfect. The reason (aside from my spree)?

Multiple layers of savings and points. All told, for each $100 that you spend at Bloomingdale’s right now, you can earn:

  • 800 American miles
  • $32
  • 250 Bloomingdale’s Loyallist Rewards points

In other words, it’s time for some new J Brand jeans!

In case you’d like to snap up a few Bloomies pieces of your own, here are the steps to take:

1. Start at TopCashBack and head to Cardpool.

2. Use the points-or-miles-earning credit card of your choice to purchase $100 worth of Bloomingdale’s gift cards (or the amount you need) in electronic gift cards. These arrive in your email in-box almost immediately.

This will earn you:

  • 2% back from the TopCashBack portal
  • 10% from Cardpool
  • a few hundred miles or points, depending on which card you use.

3. Armed with your e-gift cards, go through the American Airlines shopping portal to earn 8x miles.

Use the e-gift cards you just purchased to complete the transaction.

4. Since Bloomingdale’s is currently having their Friends and Family sale (through October 5), you will get an additional 20% off your purchase by using code FRIENDS at checkout.

5. Don’t forget to sign up for Bloomingdale’s Loyallist program! While spending $100 will get you like, fifty cents towards a $25 Bloomie’s gift card, you never know what promos they could feature in the future. Might as well join!

  1. I do not think you will get the AA miles for using gift cards. The terms state not valid on gift cards, gift certificates or other cash equivalents.

    1. Vivek – Are you looking at the Bloomingdale’s site? You are correct that you cannot use gift cards to purchase gift cards.

  2. Following your clear instructions is dizzying…I find it amazing how you figure these things out! And just in time for my new work wardrobe too. I’m also doing some sofa shopping. Any tips on how to snag a deal on furniture? Is it best to zero in on a few retailers and keep my eye out?

    1. pinkisnice – Depends on which retailers you are considering. For example, West Elm and Pottery Barn offer a 10% off deal for people who are moving. This might be stackable with possible upcoming Friends and Family sales…and of course you could go through cardpool, etc. to get more savings.

Some higher-end retailers rarely (if ever) offer these kinds of deals. So in that case you would probably be better off calling them directly to ask when upcoming sales are, then stacking as much as possible with a points-earning credit card.

If you know which retailers you are interested in, let me know and I can try to help! In fact, maybe it’s a possible post for the future – I’m sure others have the same question 🙂

  3. Pinkisnice– Sofa shopping is sooo hard! I would definitely check in on whether Loyalist levels count money (Bloomies) and also Macy’s has the annual Thanks for Sharing up and running earlier this year ( http://www.macys.com/m/campaign/thanks-for-sharing/index … gives you 10 percent back in a Macy’s card at the new year), but you have to read the fine print, usually there are a lot exceptions, I know Macy’s doesn’t do much to help you buy a mattress, for instance!

    Good luck!

      1. GingerSis – I know most of your mind is on your upcoming trip! Hope you guys have the BEST time. Can’t wait to hear all about it.

    1. GingerSis – Thanks for chiming in! Good tips. I’ll have to remember the part about the Thanks for Sharing.
