Insider tip: how to snag the secret “family row” on Alaska Airlines.

My kids and I are headed to Kauai over Thanksgiving break.

Yay! Sort of!

Josh isn’t coming. Neither is my mom. Yes, they were both planning on it at one point, and yes, we already bought the tickets. And yes, I have a new job…and some new work commitments.

So we’ve had to make some pricey cancellations and a date change.

I’m trying to be okay with it. I mean, we’re still going. My friend Hottie might even join us. And we’re staying with my cousin, who lives here (that’s Josh and Bear in her pool!):

But we’ve had to do some fancy footwork to even get all of us seated on the same flight. I’ll post more soon about what went down, but for right now, I have a great tip: the secret family row.

Do you know about this? It’s Alaska’s version of the “secret menu.” 😉

You have to call in to get it. You can only use it if your kids are age 13 or under. It doesn’t show up on the “available seats” map when you are making seat selections online.

But if you ask for it, and it’s available, they will give it to you. It’s row 12, and it looks awesome. They will literally pluck you from your seats which are scattered all over the plane and put you together in row 12.

Great idea, right? Have you ever used the secret family row?

  1. Is there anything special about that particular row, other than the fact that it is blocked for families? Seatguru says many Alaska planes are missing a window at 12A but other than that it seems pretty standard. Definitely beats not sitting together, though.

    1. Jimmy – The only special thing is that we can all sit together! If we had just tried to book online, we would have been sitting in three completely separate rows.
