So…CAN you get a second 100,000 mile sign-up bonus for the Citi Exec AAdvantage card?

At the end of January, Citi came out with an incredible offer for the Citi American Airlines World Elite Mastercard: a sign-up bonus of 100,000 American Airlines miles, plus $200 in statement credits AND Admiral’s Club lounge access. Such a great deal!

In the middle of March, PointChaser shared that she (and many others) were able to get TWO of these cards, resulting in two identical sign-up bonuses. 220,000 American Airlines miles! Amazing.

However, at the beginning of April, View From The Wing reported that the language on the sign-up offer had changed, indicating that people could now only get ONE sign-up bonus.

But I was curious. So far, I’ve only applied for one of these cards, and I’ve been feeling bummed that I missed the boat on two. I keep thinking of the saying, “He who hesitates is lost.”

Of course, now that Vanilla Reloads are no longer an option, the $10,000 spend requirement is a little more daunting – but definitely still doable. (Reloads aren’t the only game in town!) So I spent some time on Flyertalk, trying to learn if anyone had successfully applied for a second card AFTER the sign-up offer wording change, AND if they had received a second bonus.

So far, I have seen reports of numerous people who have successfully received second cards since the change, but I have not read about anyone who has received a second bonus. However, I also have not read about anyone who has not received one.

I did read this in the Flyertalk Wiki:

With Citi, if you are approved for a card, and meet the minimum spend requirement, you will get the bonus listed for the offer you applied for. Every time ! Unlike Chase or AMEX, who will send you a card, wait for you to pay the fee and spend, and then say “sorry, you don’t qualify for a bonus”. If Citi doesn’t intend to give you the bonus, they will just deny your app. They won’t even do a pull, they will just instantly deny your app. If they send you the card, and you meet the spend on time, you will get the bonus. My attorney insists I add “that could change tomorrow”, but from the Big Bang thru today, that has always been true.

Then I scoured the comments in Gary’s post (always a fun read!). There were a couple that were especially interesting, such as this one from Nate:

Based off that info, it seems that odds are fair-to-good that you could apply for a second card and get the bonus again! But I’m curious – does anyone have more information to add? Have you applied for a second card lately? Did the CSR you spoke to confirm the second bonus? Please share!

  1. The language that you’re talking about that’s in the updated offer was exactly the same in the previous offer along with all of the other churnable offers that Citi has had.

  2. Wow. This is very interesting. What’s the key to getting 2 bonuses on the offer? Applying at a different time? At a specific interval?

  3. YMMV. If you get a CSR to say you’re eligible keep notes. You could later not receive the bonus and an SM should get them posted. Probably. But one CSR saying you’ll get the miles doesn’t mean anything.

  4. I am so so confused……do I take the US Scareways transfer offer and spend $1k for 100,000 miles or do I sign up for the credit card and spend $295……..I am so glad I did well in third grade math class…….this is enough to give me a cold headache……………

  5. Maddie – hmm. Good to know. So all the fuss was unwarranted?

Debra D – Read the Flyertalk thread (I linked to it in my post) for very specific details!

Glenn – Agree, that is why I was hoping for some more data points.

  6. I just applied for 2nd CIT Bl. w/ 100,000mi. in just 21 days and was approved after calling in.

    Cheers!
