Good to know: how to get $20 off a $55 Costco membership.

Throwing a party? Going camping? Need to stock up on basics? Costco’s got you covered.

But wait, there’s more! Have you ever rented a car through Costco Travel? This site can be a great tool for finding cheap car rentals.

While anyone can search the site for deals, to actually book a car rental you need a membership.

Through February 8, when you buy a $55 Costco membership through Living Social, they will throw in a $20 Costco gift card, plus a few extra goodies:

  • A free Kirkland Signature 48-pack of AA batteries
  • A free rotisserie chicken
  • A free Kirkland Signature case of water
  • $4 off Kirkland Signature coffee
  • $4 off Kirkland Signature albacore tuna.

Note that if you have a current Costco membership, you are not eligible for this deal.

Costco Travel has discounted prices for Alamo, Avis, Budget, and Enterprise. I’ve sometimes found them to be cheaper than Hotwire, plus you can cancel reservations for no charge (or simply not show up!). In addition, you can see the rental car company when you book your rental. Sometimes the rental will include an additional driver for free.

If you’ve been eyeing a membership, now would be a great time to snap one up!

  1. Could you please post this onyour Facebook page so I can share it with my friends and you can get credit?

    Thanks!

    1. candace – Done! You’re so sweet! Also – great reminder that I need to pay more attention to my Facebook page.

  2. BTW — one of the best advantages of using Costco for rental cars (besides the often unbeatable prices) is that the additional driver is almost always free! A big savings when you rent for 28 days at a time as we do (when we are here in Florida for several months, from our home in Germany).
Do keep checking the prices, as they change on a daily basis — sometimes even hourly! Then, just book the new rate and cancel the old booking (and rinse and repeat until the day of the actual rental). Very easy. (Just as often, however, the prices go UP! One reservation I’m holding has shot up from $527 for 28 days to just over $1200 for the same period. YIKES!)

  3. Thanks! I wonder if I could do a gift membership for my sister, would be new for her (not me), what a fantastic deal! Also a good reminder for me to check out their rental car rates. In my experience, always found better rates using Amex AWD code (for avis) but maybe things have changed.

  4. Costco does have good car rental deals (esp for Avis and Budget). After you book with Costco, you can track your rental at http://www.autoslash.com and they’ll let you know if they find a better. Since you don’t have to pay up-front for car rentals, you have the opportunity to re-book if a better deal comes along.

  5. Rebecca – I think you could do a gift membership.

Jonathan – Yes! I love using Autoslash in this way.

    Sharon – 🙂
