Free money for kids with Capital One!

I wrote yesterday about how you could earn an easy $200 by signing up for a checking and savings account with Capital One. But why should we adults have all the fun?

If you’ve got kids, they can earn a sign-up bonus as well. While it’s not as big of a bonus, it’s still free money!

I opened accounts for both of my kids during a similar promo last year. It was actually a great idea because we now deposit their allowance directly into the accounts, and they can see their balances increasing every week. It has really encouraged them to save, instead of randomly spending their money on Pokemon cards and packs of gum.

More Specifics

  • Bonus offer ends today, December 2, at 11:59 pm PST.
  • You must be a US citizen or permanent resident with a valid Social Security number.
  • Account holders must be at least 18 years old or a joint holder with an adult.
  • Don’t worry, you (the adult) are the only one who can make a transfer to and from this account. This includes setting up and editing Automatic Savings Plans.
  • The child can access the account by using their own Customer Number and PIN and can do the following:
    • View the account balance and activity and statements.
    • Update personal information, like their address or phone number.
    • Create a nickname for their account and a personalized ‘Saver ID’.

  1. I have this nasty poltergeist that lives in my laptop and withholds your posts until about four or five have stacked up and then delivers them all. So I’m way behind.

    I made a large order from Amazon yesterday without knowing about the Amex tie-in. Ouch!

    Am definitely going in for the capital one savings account today. Do you know if there is a minimum balance for the kids savings account?

      About minimum balance for kids’ accounts: I don’t *think* there is a minimum. If there is, it’s not very high. I tried to figure it out from their site but I couldn’t, so I sent an email to them. In the meantime, let me know if you learn the answer.

    Look up your grandson’s account number, the bonus will be deposited immediately, even before they transfer the money in.

  5. It looks like I missed the $125/$75 promo yesterday, but I was able to sign up my kid for the free $25. It’s already “pending” in his account register… 4 minutes later! I think it’s only waiting on verifying my initial opening deposit.

    I messed up though and opened my son’s first and then mine… and it wouldn’t give me the bonus (only $50 now… but still!). I guess I’m already considered an “existing customer” since I’m the adult on his account… it already assigned a customer number : (

    Anyone else trying to get this deal should try signing themselves up first and THEN their kid.. maybe that works for you to each receive a sign-up bonus.

  7. Anne – Do you mean per person? A good friend of mine and her husband were able to each sign up, plus they each signed up one of their kids, and they all got the bonuses!! $450!!

    Maybe another instance for an email?

  8. Wow, we just got off the phone with customer service there because one of our grandkids did not get the bonus. We were told only one kid per family. It never said anything about that on the site that I could see, although I have an allergy to fine print. However, they were both signed up under hubby. I couldn’t get in on it because in some vague, distant past I apparently had been a customer of ING, so not considered “new.”

    But, I think I will email them just to see if it is a case of different CSRs, different answers. Although it wounds like one kid PER adult.
