Check your wallet – you might be missing $57 from Amex!

A few months ago, I wrote about how I “found” $57 in my Amex benefits package due to the fact that many Amex cards featured a full roadside assistance package, which is similar to standard AAA coverage.

At the time I wrote the post, the following cards offered the premium service:

  • Delta Reserve
  • Platinum
  • Mercedes Benz Platinum
  • Gold Premier Rewards
  • Gold Business
  • Gold

However, I just got a heads-up from a reader (thanks, Marc!) who let me know that the premium nature of this benefit is being discontinued for some cards.

In other words, after November 30, Amex will help you get assistance, but they will charge you for it!

This is a big change from “free.”

When I called Amex to ask which cards would be removed from the program, I was told that the change applied to all Tier 1 and Tier 2 cards. While I wasn’t able to get a complete list of exactly what those cards were, the agent mentioned the Everyday Preferred Card, Open cards, and any co-branded cards.

Amex personal cards that will continue to offer Full Roadside Assistance

Most of the cards that offered the service will continue to do so. The list that I confirmed with the agent include:

  • Delta Reserve
  • Platinum
  • Mercedes Benz Platinum
  • Centurion
  • Gold Business

Check your coverage if you’ve got a Gold card or a Gold Premier Rewards Card

At this point, I’m not sure about the Amex Gold and Gold Premier Rewards cards. In the past, they offered the coverage, although it seems as if they might be on the chopping block. Since neither Josh nor I have one of these cards, I am unable to access the information, and none of the agents I spoke to were able to tell me for sure one way or the other. If you have one of these cards, you can find this information on your statement, or online when you are logged in to your account.

This is a big change in benefits! Does it affect you?

  1. Ugh! So annoying! Thanks for The head’s up!!! 🙂

  2. That’s a negative on the Gold Card. Tried using it today as I have in the past, but to no avail….
